Model of care

Welcome to NeuroOptimize, a newly established day mental health clinic and customisable Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatment centre committed to serving our community.

Our mission is to empower and enable clients to cope with life realities through insight, understanding, and an individual treatment process. We achieve this through client-centred, evidence-based, integrated care.

Our clinic is grounded in a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach, delivering evidence-based mental health treatments. Our core services include brief interventions, customisable rTMS for depression, and comprehensive psychoeducation, all designed to address the interconnectedness of mind, body, and lifestyle for holistic care.

In collaboration with Edith Cowan University (ECU), we are also engaging in pioneering research to further our understanding and treatment of how customisable rTMS may help clients with Traumatic Brain Injuries and Concussions. Our aim is to enhance patient outcomes and contribute to the field of mental health care.

We offer a range of services tailored to meet diverse needs, including:

  • Customised Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatment, lasting six-eight weeks, will include EEG monitoring, comprehensive reports, and clinical reviews to assess treatment response. Treatment response is monitored closely and changes during the treatment according to EEG. Referral from a psychiatrist is required.
  • GP-led mental health consulting services include physical workup alongside the patient's regular care team as needed, and collaboration with our multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary in-house team and external services according to individualised plan.
  • Psychoeducation services focus on depression recovery, the pillars of well-being, and client-centred lifestyle goals.

What is individualised rTMS/MeRT

Individualised rTMS/MeRT, is the abbreviation for Magnetic Resonance Therapy. It is a highly customised use of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, or rTMS, based on sophisticated diagnostics. rTMS is recognised by The Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) in accordance with The Professional Practice Guideline 16

At NeuroOptimize, we use the term MeRT for our treatment, which is the patented name for the specific rTMS protocol developed by our US partner. MeRT is an Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based rTMS treatment that is customised to the individual brain. Through more than 35.000 treatments, our partners have collected data and continue to innovate, learn and build algorithms. This represents the largest database of pre-post-treatment EEGs in the world. Because it is customised specifically to the individual brain, it has shown very good results. It has, for many, been a life changer.

We treat people with a prescription from a psychiatrist. Our treatment has shown great results for depression as well as for other depression-related conditions. Read more about these under Conditions.

What we do is stimulate the brain by using magnetic stimulation. This helps change disruptions in ways the brain is speaking to its different parts. Managing these disruption can help people manage their symptoms.

We measure the progress several times during treatment to make sure that you benefit from it and do not have treatments if you are non-responsive.

The treatment is a non-invasive, painless, and drug-free option for treating a wide range of neurological conditions.

Internationally individualised rTMS/MeRT treatment has shown some documented results in improving symptoms associated with such as Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS), Concussion//Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and other conditions such as Depression, Anxiety, Sleep Disorders, and many more. Not all people respond to the treatment, but those who do, have found that it has increased their quality of life. The individualised rTMS/MeRT has shown in studies to have a better treatment respons than standard TMS treatments.

The treatment equipment used for the individualised rTMS/MeRT process is approved by the Australian Government Department of Health - Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The equipment generates magnetic waves that allow us to stimulate specifically targeted areas in the brain gently.

Balance your brain with gentle stimulation

Individualised rTMS/MeRT is used to balance the coordination between your frontal lobes and your back lobes (occipital). The system reprograms dysfunctional electrical signals and restores functions.

Through an EEG recording, we analyse your brain´s pattern of function to detect possible abnormalities and to state your individual optimal neural synchronisation.

We treat you as an individual person with individual brain patterns to find the ideal state of your brain functions. This can lead to significant improvements for your brain and, therefore, improve your life quality.

The human brain is unique

The human brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. That is an amazingly complex organ, and when its functions are optimal, it supports us in becoming our intrinsic best selves.

The brain waves or electrical oscillations control, through the 100 billion neurons, how our brain functions.

When the frontal lobes and the back lobes are not synchronised, our brain performance slows down. Both internal and external forces can disrupt this synchronisation. Research also shows that age, sleep disorders, stress, and emotional trauma or addictions slow down brain functions. That means that the quality and behavior between our neurons can disrupt many things, and for some, they disrupt our life quality.

Neurons are known as “information messengers,” and they deliver messages through electrical impulses.

By having the individualised rTMS/MeRT treatment, you will be able to understand your unique brainwaves. This gives you the opportunity to work with your individual brain and treat it the best way to support it.

Please see below the example of a client with depression.

The Difference Between Standard rTMS and individualised rTMS/MeRT  Protocol Treatment?

Both MeRT and standard rTMS therapy are non-invasive, drug-free, and highly effective treatment options; however, there are some key differences between the two treatments.

rTMS uses a standardised protocol to treat depression, anxiety, OCD, etc., and individualised rTMS/MeRT uses an individualised protocol.

Imagine going into a shoe store; all they sell is a size ten. It is good if you are a size ten; if you are anything else but a size ten, the shoes might not fit you as they should.

By combining rTMS with sequential EEG recordings, individualised rTMS/MeRT is a highly personalised treatment that can improve functioning and synchrony for various conditions affecting mental health and cognition. The sequential EEG recordings document how the brain responds to the treatment and are shared with the client through consultations with our certified Clinical staff.

Both individualised rTMS/MeRT and rTMS treatment are outpatient treatments. During MeRT and rTMS treatment, patients recline in a private treatment room and may relax, read, work, or watch television during treatment. Both treatments use a magnet to deliver gentle magnetic pulses and stimulate specific brain areas. Each treatment session lasts about 30 minutes, after which patients can get back to their daily activities right away, including work or school.

The MeRT Technology

The MeRT platform is a patent-protected process that is currently undergoing rigorous research by the Department of Defense in the United States and several private institutions. Over the last few years, more than 35,000 people have received treatment in the United States with huge success and results of their treatment. Globally, there are more than 60 clinics conducting this customised protocol version of rTMS, including in Queensland, Australia.

Results may vary based on individual users, and there are no guarantees given.
